OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Kernel Panics and SMB

I will try to present this information as concisely as possible. We have numerous iMacs in our company.

All are running OS X 10.9.2.

They share files using a MacMini running OS X Mavericks Server 10.9.2.

Periodically different iMacs are experiencing kernel panics.

Most of the iMacs are model 13,1

A couple that have experienced the problem are 8,1.

At least one that has the experience regularly is 12,1.

A couple of machines might have Sophos running, but it typically is not indicated in the backtrace.

There is no weird hardware. A couple of machines have a ScanSnap scanner connected, but most do not, and the kernel panics still occur.

The list of kernel extensions is clean. It's all com.apple.EXTENSION NAME all the way down. Nothing that isn't from Apple.

What they all have in common at the time of the crash is the following:

-----------------------------------------------------

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

com.apple.filesystems.smbfs(2.0)[8A68DA4E-715B-3B79-92A2-DC4769BB94DA]@0xffffff 7f883c1000->0xffffff7f8840cfff

These folks connect to the server and stay there all day. They are encouraged to disconnect from the server and restart their computers at night, but sometimes they don't.

Still the Kernel Panics only started after 10.9.1 and have continued under 10.9.2. They seem to me to be related to smb2.0 and connecting to the OS X Mavericks Server. They might have started before 10.9.1 like at (10.9.0) but it was only reported to me after they noticed it was happening to multiple people and it seemed to be somewhat chronic.

I've also looked through the support site here and found many people complaining about what seem to be similar problems blaming everything from flash drives to anti-malware software, and I've found that they too had the smbfs kext in backtrace.

I have 2 iMacs on my desk in my office. 14,1 and 14,2 and I experience no kernel panics, but then I'm never connected to an smb server, either.

Has anyone else heard of SMB causing kernel panics? At this point, it is not the end of the world though my client expects a solution ASAP. It can cause a person to lose a great deal of work.

As always any help will be sincerly and greatly appreciated and if I've broken some weird arcane rule about where I post what in this forum, I humbly apologize to those who take such matters very seriously. It is not intentional.

Here are 3 of full kernel panic dumps for examination:

This problem has temporarily been dealt with.

It proved all but impossible to get users to voluntarily use the default method for connecting to the server, which would automatically use SMB.

So I turned off SMB on every shared volume. Except for one that must unfortunately be used by a stupid archaic printer/scanner/PC combination.

I then set up each computer so if the user clicks on the server volume in the Finder SideBar, they will be logged in using AFP.

Since moving everything to AFP, no more mysterious kernel panics on the desktop clients.

Jul 1, 2014 3:24 PM in response to Marvin Price1

We are having the same problem, but unfortunately do not have the option of AFP. In our investigation we have gotten so far as to determine the problem lies with applications that create temporary files (Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, Apple Preview). It's an intermittent problem, so it has been hard to nail down.

But with Mac OS 10.9.4, the problem, at least so far in Preview, can be reproduce fairly consistently. If you open a pdf to modify, it will sit there all day, no problem. But as soon as you try to modify it, you can notice a temp file pop-up (in the Finder window), then seconds later, like 3-5, the system shuts down. I also noticed that trying to copy over an existing file with the same name can cause this as well.

We are out of options, and these servers are critical for our production workflows.

If anyone has found any kind of fix, it would be much appreciated if shared.

Jul 11, 2014 12:44 AM in response to ronb.pennwell

We have the very same problem here 😢 !

We have it on 3 different Mac's (2 new MacBook Pros, 1 2013 iMac), it started with 10.9.3 on one Mac but

now with 10.9.4 we have it on 3 Mac's. We use a NetApp file share connected with SMB (SMB2).

Alle Useres report that the where working with the File Share copying or replacing files bevor the Kernel Panic

happened. The Kernel Panic log is the same as posted on top of this page:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace: com.apple.filesystems.smbfs(2.0)....

Based on the info here and what the Useres told me I also think it could really be the SMB (SMB2) protocol 😢 !

My solution for now remove all aliasses and links to all shares and remount them using the cifs protocol wich connect with SMB1:

e.g. cifs://yourshreaddress.com

Please post here if this helps you also !

Cheers 😉

Jul 11, 2014 2:04 PM in response to Rolf Kocherhans

Ok Rolf, thanks.

We have had weeks at a time with no problems, then one day one of our three users having the problem would see it 3-5 times in one day. I suspect they must be doing something slightly different, or they're just very busy, we hadn't been able to reproduce what they do consistently. However I HAVE been able to on my system. With a PDF on the server and using Apple's Preview application to modify the files, I can get it to quit consistently. I've slept since then, so I need to reestablish exactly what I did. When I get it, I'll post it here.

Cheers

Jul 17, 2014 1:05 AM in response to ronb.pennwell

For me getting everyone to use AFP seemed to mitigate the problem for a while. I allowed SMB on shares again and things were quiet, only with the advent of 10.9.4 and the 14.4.3 version of Office all **** broke lose. Going to try the cifs and see if that helps.

I'm having a problem also where people are disconnected form the server, the finder crashes, and when they attempt to reconnect and start working on documents again, the document is locked and only restarting the server frees it up. I could just shut the service down and bring it back up, but I'm more comfortable restarting the server. Either way I have to kick all the users off.

Aug 26, 2014 11:55 AM in response to Rolf Kocherhans

The problem is back for me, on one maybe 2 computers.

Unfortunately users at this particular client report problems sporadically. I'm waiting to hear back from one user in particular before I start looking through her crash logs.

In any case, the problem is not fixed. It manifests itself particularly when users edit Word documents on the server. The client is running 10.9.4 and the server is 10.9.4. This morning this particular client has reported a complete system crash as was previously happening. She is using CIFS rather than SMB or AFP. I'm going to move her back to AFP..

Came here to comment that I am seeing this same problem in many Macs in my environment. It happens particularly frequently with our new Mac Minis (6,2) running 10.9.4. We had previously deprecated smb1/cifs here because of issues with file-lock. Now that everyone is using SMB2, we are seeing frequent kernel panics. It is happening primarily in Adobe CS6 apps and MS Office in some cases. To date, we have found no viable fix
